The Week of Lies and Smears:

Obama Slips on the Lipstick

Drafting is a strategy oft-used by racecar drivers, but it works for Playmakers as well—especially Presidential candidates. Of the many Plays for the Presidency this week, John McCain was doing his best impression of Kyle Busch, Drafting Obama’s message of “change.” In fact, McCain was Drafting close enough that the Obama camp felt the need to remind Americans with a Fiat – a standard strategy for countering Drafters – that he was the candidate who was supposed to personify change in the first place.

Meanwhile, this week will forever be known as the “lipstick week” in American politics, and of course, lipstick and all, it wasn’t void of influence strategy. By making a big deal about Obama’s now infamous “lipstick on a pig” quip, the McCain camp ran a Bait , and the Obama camp bit—and bit hard.

For his part, Obama spent the better part of the week running Recasts of what he really meant to say by “lipstick on a pig.” But it was too late. By commenting so vociferously on the story, he gave it legs. No doubt, he would have been better served by running a Pass – or at the minimum a quick Deflect – which would have most likely put the issue to bed a lot sooner.

Of course, these weren’t the only plays run this week by the candidates and their campaigns. Senator Biden ran a Preempt by releasing his financial figures; social conservative-Proxies ran Recasts on Sarah Palin’s lack of Washington resume; and Cornfield ran a play of his own on the McCain camp, Calling them Out for lying about things that are, according to Mike, (and Factcheck.org) irrefutable.
